Discover the secrets and benefits of dyeing with natural dyes

Whether dyeing fabric or wool - in "Natural Dyeing," Céline Philippe introduces you step by step to her secrets of natural dyeing . It is her declaration of love for nature and its diversity. Céline realized that plants from the home garden not only serve as food or medicine, but can also add color to wardrobes and home accessories. Since the textile industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries in the world after the food industry, she set herself the task of developing an environmentally friendly alternative to permanent fabric dyeing . The greatest challenge? Mordanting without harm to the environment or health . The mordant creates a permanent bond between the plant dye and the fiber to be dyed. There are plant dyes for which mordant is not necessary. They are called substantive dyes. These include onion, avocado, turmeric, and indigo dyes. For all other reactive dyes, mordant is essential to permanently bond the color to the fabric. Céline found the solution by combining the desired plant dye with plants naturally rich in aluminum oxide or oxalic acid , as well as plants with tannins. Céline Philippe has brought insights from centuries-old natural dyeing techniques into the modern age, demonstrating a way to reconnect with nature and its diversity when dyeing fabrics. In this book, she explains what equipment is needed for natural dyeing at home , how to extract natural dyes from plants in various locations, from gardens to forests and meadows, and which fibers are particularly well-suited for dyeing textiles. She then explains in detail how to process and fix the natural dyes. All steps can be easily implemented in the home kitchen. Atmospheric photography of natural motifs, typical of Céline's label "Teinture Sauvage," makes the book a particularly enjoyable experience.

About the author

Celine Philippe

Céline Philippe had already been successfully practicing law for over 20 years when she realized that the pace of city life was becoming increasingly stressful. She decided to take a radical step and moved to the countryside, into the ruins of an old house. She spent months renovating it herself, focusing on sustainable construction. She also planted a vegetable garden and continually learned more about native plants and their uses. Today, Céline lives a self-sufficient lifestyle and runs France's first completely sustainable dye label. Her atmospheric photography has over 23,000 followers on Instagram (@teinturesauvage).
