Traditional knitting techniques in modern designs

Tradition meets modernity: Traditional knitting patterns and techniques from Estonia in modern designs. Knitted pieces from Estonia are special: The knitting patterns revolve around techniques, embellishments, and regional characteristics. Each region has its own motifs, color combinations, and even individual knitting techniques that are passed down from generation to generation. Similar features are found in other regions, such as Fair Isle knitting or classic Norwegian sweaters. Estonian-born knitwear designer Aleks Byrd has collected these traditional techniques and instructions and incorporated them into modern designs, from hats to sweaters.
Knit cardigans and sweaters using the Roosimine inlay technique: A unique blend of intarsia knitting and jacquard, the patterns are reminiscent of embroidery on knitwear, but can be knitted directly.
Knit gloves and cuffs with Narmad, the knitted fringes: Knitted fringes provide a beautiful finish to your project.
Decorate a sweater or knit a shawl with vitsad (braided borders): Exciting effects can be achieved with crossed stitches.
Knitting hats and pullovers with Vikkel (crossed or pulled stitches): The false cable pattern, which can be knitted without a cable needle, creates pretty intricate knitting patterns.
Knitting garments or a loop with nuppud (nubs): Although nupps (fine nubs) are mainly typical of Estonian lace patterns, they also look good on a stockinette stitch background and add an interesting structure.
A special knitting book with atmospheric photography. The original edition of "Estonian Knitting" was published by Laine Publishing, a publisher who has since made a name for themselves for knitting books with exceptional photography. The images in this book, too, will whet your appetite for knitting. The knitting patterns and 19 instructions are particularly suitable for knitters with some experience. Even ambitious beginners can master the techniques thanks to illustrated step-by-step instructions. Those who prefer smaller projects can start with knitting hats or old sock knitting patterns. The instructions for knitting cardigans, sweaters, and pullovers, on the other hand, promise a particularly intensive knitting experience. "Estonian Knitting" is an introduction to Estonian knitting patterns, both traditional and newly interpreted techniques, and is aimed at anyone who loves to knit.

About the author

Alex Byrd

Aleks Byrd is a "Väliseestlane" (Väliseestlane), the Estonian term for a fellow countryman or woman who grew up abroad. Aleks has lived in the USA since childhood, but feels a strong connection to Estonian culture through her family. Knitting allowed her to immerse herself deeply in the traditions and culture of this small country. Using antiquarian books, she taught herself traditional Estonian knitting techniques and traveled throughout the country to meet knitters and learn more about traditional patterns and instructions. Today, she combines her knowledge in knitting patterns that combine tradition and modernity, thus bringing Estonian culture closer to people.
